Day 3 - Wednesday, August 17th

     

Hamburgerbukta 79° 30’ N with some of the best remains of graves on Svalbard

Day 4 - Thursday, August 18th

    

Sørdalsbukta 79° 40’ N - German Weather Station called "Kreuzritter"

Monacobreen 79° 20’ N situated in the bottom of Liefdefjorden. This glacier is 38 km long and
5 km broad. The front is up to 70-80 meters high.

Mushamna 79° 30’ N

Gråhuken 79° 40’ N, where Christiane Ritter and the two men lived during their overwintering
in 1934-1935.Christiane Ritter wrote her book called “Eine Frau erlebt die Polarnacht”.

 

Day 5 - Friday, August 19th

     

Alkefjellet 79° 35’ N - Zodiac cruise in front of an impressive bird cliff
From the surface of the sea and 150 meters up,
rocks host about 300.000 Brünnich’s guillemot and kittiwakes in couples!

Sorgfjorden 79º 50’ N - Flaggstanghaugen - Arc-of-Meridian Expedition in 1899-1902.
This expedition was a cooperation between Russians and Swedes
trying to verify if the theory about the Earth being compressed by the poles was false of true.

We were able to get to Wordiebukta and "Haudegen".

 

Day 6 - Saturday, August 20th

     

Wordiebukta and "Haudegen" 80° 00’ N - German Weather Station called "Haudegen"
"Haudegen" was led by Wilhelm Dege in the period of September 13th 1944 to September 6th 1945. This was the only successful Arctic operation of the German Naval Weather Service in 1944/1945.

In the ice 81° 00’ N

Sjuøyane

It was possible to cross the 81st parallel. On our way we saw some polar bears. Polar bears
are solitary animals and they don’t stay together outside the breeding season. The two polar bears met
and put their noses together.

Day 7 - Sunday, August 21th

     

Landing on Storøya at 80° 00’ N
This island is situated east of Nordaustlandet (North East Land) and its just 25 km².
The island is almost wholly covered by an ice cap.

Walruses

Sabine’s Gull, only a few pairs of which nest on Svalbard
(the only place in the Barent’s Sea where they are found).
This species was first seen in Svalbard in 1898 on Storøya but has never been proved to breed there.
The bird was incubating three olive-coloured eggs – a remarkable discovery!

     

Kvitøya 80° 04’ N - discovered by the dutch captain Cornelis Giles in 1707.
Kvitøya is the most northeast situated island in the Svalbard archipelago and over 99 % is covered by ice. Because of the ice there are only two places to land on Kvitøya, Andrèeneset on the west side and Kraemerpynten on the north east side. On this island Salomon August Andrèe, Knut Frænkel and Nils Strindberg ended their lives 108 years ago after their attempt to reach the North pole. They were found
33 years after their death by the Norwegian boat ”Brattvaag”. There is a monument put up on the island in memory of Andrèe and his men.


Day 8 - Monday, August 22nd

     

    

Bråsvellbreen 79° 25’ N
Bråsvellbreen is a glacier front of the Austfonna ice cap on Nordaustlandet.
This glacier has a 230 km long front and it’s the longest glacier front on the nothern hemisphere.
The glacier front is 15 – 40 meters high.

     

 

Day 9 - Tuesday, August 23rd

   

Sundbukta 78° 00’ N - on the South-West side of Barentsøya. At this place there was build
a hut called "Wuerzburger Huette" during the last geophysical year in 1957-1958.

Kapp Lee 78° 00’ N, where the Swedish-Russian Arc-of-Meridian Expedition in 1899-1902 had an astrological station.

Day 10 - Wednesday, August 24th

     

Vestre Burgerbukta - Cruise in front of a very active glacier front (Hansbreen)

Belugas swimming around the ship.

Brepollen - the innermost bay in Hornsund where you are surrounded by glacier
in all directions except west were there is an opening.

Gnålodden 77° 00’ N with some historical remains of the pomors and the third northernmost
river springs in the world: situated nearby the hut with a water temperature around 7°.

Kapp Borthen 77° 10’ N - The plane was a Junkers 88 Light Bomber
and the men onboard survived the crash during the World War II on Svalbard.

     

 

Day 11 - Thursday, August 25th
